How to use London Tube Map
TOP TEN ATTRACTIONS IN LONDON FROM PICCADILLY CIRCUS – TUBE MAP
- The British Museum: Take the Piccadilly line from Piccadilly Circus to Holborn, then walk for about 8 minutes. It should take around 15-20 minutes in total.
- Tower of London: Take the Bakerloo line to Embankment, then change to the Circle or District line to Tower Hill. This should take around 30 minutes.

- Westminster Abbey: Take the Bakerloo line to Embankment, then switch to the District or Circle line to Westminster. The total journey time is around 20 minutes.
- The Shard: Take the Bakerloo line to Embankment, then change to the Northern line to London Bridge. The total journey time should be around 25 minutes.

To use the London Underground map, also known as the “Tube map”, you can refer to the map itself to plan your route. You can find the map on the official website of Transport for London (TFL), at various stations, or in printed materials such as guidebooks or brochures.
- Locate your starting point and destination on the map.
- Identify the lines that connect your starting point to your destination.
- Check the map’s key or legend to determine the direction of travel on those lines (some lines have multiple branches, so you’ll need to make sure you’re headed in the right direction).
- Note any transfer points you’ll need to make along the way.
- Once you have your route planned, you can use the TFL website or apps to check for any disruptions or delays on your route.
- Purchase a ticket or use an oyster card or contactless payment to access the tube.

The Underground Map has its origins in the
Metropolitan Railway, the world’s first underground passenger railway. Opened in January 1863, it is now part of the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. The first line to operate underground electric traction trains, the City & South London Railway in 1890, is now part of the Northern line.[7] The network has expanded to 11 lines, and in 2020/21 was used for 296 million passenger journeys,[3] making it the world’s 12th busiest metro system. The 11 lines collectively handle up to 5 million passenger journeys a day.[8]

The system’s first tunnels were built just below the ground, using the cut-and-cover method; later, smaller, roughly circular tunnels—which gave rise to its nickname, the Tube—were dug through at a deeper level.[9] The system has 270 stations and 250 miles (400 km) of track.[10] Despite its name, only 45% of the system is under the ground: much of the network in the outer environs of London is on the surface.[10] In addition, the Underground does not cover most southern parts of Greater London, and there are only 29 stations south of the River Thames.[11]
The early tube lines, originally owned by several private companies, were brought together under the “UndergrounD” brand in the early 20th century, and eventually merged along with the sub-surface lines and bus services in 1933 to form London Transport under the control of the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB). The current operator, London Underground Limited (LUL), is a wholly owned subsidiary of Transport for London (TfL), the statutory corporation responsible for the transport network in London.[9] As of 2015, 92% of operational expenditure is covered by passenger fares.[12] The Travelcard ticket was introduced in 1983 and Oyster, a contactless ticketing system, in 2003.[13] Contactless bank card payments were introduced in 2014,[14] the first public transport system in the world to do so.[15]
The LPTB commissioned many new station buildings, posters and public artworks in a modernist style.[16][17][18] The schematic Tube map, designed by Harry Beck in 1931, was voted a national design icon in 2006 and now includes other TfL transport systems such as the Docklands Light Railway, London Overground, TfL Rail, and Tramlink. Other famous London Underground branding includes the roundel and the Johnston typeface, created by Edward Johnston in 1916.
